Born into a noble family in Urbino, Blessed Benedict of Urbino was orphaned at the age of seven and raised by tutors. Highly gifted, he earned doctorates in civil and canon law from the University of Padua. Despite the prospect of a prestigious career at the Roman court, he chose a life of simplicity and joined the Capuchin Order in 1584, taking the name Benedict.

In 1600, he joined Lawrence of Brindisi on a mission to Bohemia, preaching and defending the Catholic faith during a time of religious division. Benedict dedicated much of his ministry to preaching in small and remote towns, bringing the Gospel especially to the poor and neglected. In his later years, he served the poor in Fossombrone despite suffering from frail health.

Known for his austere lifestyle, Blessed Benedict of Urbino practiced severe mortification —frequent fasting, sleeping on wooden planks, and wearing a hairshirt, a rough garment designed to cause discomfort as an act of penance and spiritual discipline.

Despite his learning, he remained deeply humble and devoted many hours to prayer before the Blessed Sacrament and the Crucifix. His feast day is celebrated on 30 April, and he is regarded as a patron of missionaries.
