Franciscan Saint | Blessed Agnes of Prague

Blessed Agnes of Prague was a Bohemian princess known for her deep humility, charity, and dedication to a life of poverty and service to God. Born into the royal family of King Ottokar I of Bohemia, she chose to renounce wealth, power, and several royal marriage proposals in order to follow Christ.

Inspired by the spirituality of St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi, Agnes founded a hospital for the poor and established a Poor Clare monastery in Prague. Encouraged and guided by letters from Saint Clare of Assisi, Agnes lived a life marked by prayer, obedience, and strict poverty. Although elected abbess, she preferred to be called “senior sister,” humbly serving the community by cooking, caring for the sick, and mending clothes for lepers.

Blessed Agnes is remembered for her compassion, strong faith, and courageous decision to place God above worldly privilege. She was beatified in 1874 and remains a model of selfless love and radical trust in God.

Reflection: What comforts or attachments might God be inviting me to surrender this Lent?
