Franciscan Saint | Blessed Bernard of Offida

Blessed Bernard of Offida was born into a humble peasant family and began working as a shepherd at the age of seven. Long hours in solitude on the hills nurtured his deep love for prayer and meditation. Drawn to God from an early age, he often spent entire Sundays in the Capuchin church of Offida in prayer and fasting.

He entered the Capuchin novitiate in 1626 at the age of 22. Though illiterate, he became deeply versed in Scripture and widely known for his deep spiritual insight. His gift for reconciling enemies earned him the title “Angel of Peace,” and his quiet influence was so strong that two bishops testified he had done more for their dioceses than many prominent preachers. “Hungry for souls”, he served as a devoted missionary to the poor rural communities.

On his deathbed, he urged his fellow friars to remain faithful to the Rule, to love one another, to live in peace, and to be generous to the poor. He died in Offida in 1694 at the age of 90 and was beatified by Pope Pius VI 101 years later.
