Franciscan Saint | Blessed Francis Solanus Casey

Born into a large Irish immigrant farming family in Wisconsin in 1870, Solanus Casey had limited formal education due to illness and frequent moves during his childhood. He was ordained as a “simplex” priest, which meant he was not permitted to preach doctrinal homilies or hear confessions.

Despite these limitations, during his 14 years as porter and sacristan in Yonkers, New York, he became widely known for his inspiring spiritual talks. He also conducted well-attended services for the sick. On an average day, 150 to 200 people visited him at the friary’s front office, seeking his blessing, counsel, or prayer. Many believed he played a key role in the healings and blessings they received.

Father Solanus’ trust in God’s providence left a lasting impression on all who met him. He often encouraged others with the simple yet powerful words, “Thank God ahead of time.”

During the Great Depression, he founded a soup kitchen to serve the poor, a ministry continued by the Capuchins to this day.

After his death, thousands attended his funeral. His remains were found to be incorrupt when exhumed in 1987. He was beatified in 2017, in recognition of his holy life and enduring spiritual impact.
