Blessed Marco d’Aviano was an Italian Capuchin priest, renowned as a powerful preacher, miracle worker, and papal diplomat who played a key role in rallying Christian forces to defend Europe against the Ottoman Turks. He was known as the “Apostle of the Act of Perfect Contrition” and served as a trusted spiritual advisor to Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I.
At the age of 16, he attempted to leave home to preach martyrdom in Crete, but a stop at a Capuchin friary changed the course of his life, leading him to join the order instead. He was ordained a priest in 1655 and soon gained a reputation for his powerful and zealous preaching.
In 1676, he became widely known as a miracle worker after a bedridden nun was reportedly healed following his blessing. From 1680 until his death, he served as a close advisor to Emperor Leopold I, traveling across Europe to promote peace and encourage unity among Catholic rulers against the Ottoman threat.
During the Battle of Vienna in 1683, he was present to celebrate Mass and bless the allied troops, offering spiritual encouragement that strengthened their resolve and contributed to the defence of Central Europe. He continued his ministry until his death from cancer in Vienna in 1699. He was buried in the imperial crypt, an extraordinary honour for a humble friar, and was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2003.
