Raised in a wealthy family, St. Anthony of Padua entered religious life at the age of 15. He was a gifted preacher who often drew large crowds with sermons that were both simple and deeply theological. Recognizing his exceptional abilities, Saint Francis of Assisi appointed him as one of the leading theologians in the Franciscan Order.
He was also known for extraordinary miracles attributed to his intercession, including accounts of bilocation. One famous story tells of him preaching to the fish when people refused to listen, after which the fish gathered to hear him.
Another well-known account involves a novice who stole Anthony’s handwritten book of sermons. Anthony prayed for its return, and not only was the book brought back, but the thief also repented and returned to the faith. Since then, countless people have turned to him for help in finding lost items, often sharing powerful testimonies of his intercession.
Reflection: Do I make time to deepen my understanding of Scripture, like St Anthony?
