Franciscan Saint | St. Francis of Assisi

St. Francis of Assisi was born in Assisi, Italy, to a wealthy merchant family. He grew up enjoying a comfortable and privileged life, spending his father’s money lavishly on fine clothes and parties. Looking back on his youth, Francis described that period of his life: “I lived in sin.”

After experiencing war and captivity, Francis began to realise that wealth, fame and worldly success could not satisfy the deepest longing of his heart. He began seeking God and searching for a greater purpose in life.

One day, while praying before the crucifix in the Church of San Damiano, Francis heard Christ say, “Rebuild my house.” Taking these words literally at first, Francis began to collect funds to repair the church. Later, he realised that Christ was calling him to something much greater: to help renew the Church through a life of radical faith and holiness. Francis gave up his wealth for a life of poverty, simplicity and trust in God. He preached repentance and embraced the poor and lepers, seeing in them the face of Christ.

Francis’ joyful way of life attracted many young men to follow Christ with him. In 1209, Pope Innocent III approved their way of life, marking the beginning of the Order of Friars Minor, or the Franciscans.

Francis loved creation, seeing all creatures as gifts from God. He called the sun, moon, earth, water and animals his brothers and sisters. His Canticle of the Creatures praises God through the beauty of creation.

In 1224, while praying on Mount La Verna, Francis received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ on his own body, becoming the first recorded Christian to receive them.

Despite suffering from illness in his final years, Francis remained joyful and faithful. He died on 3 October 1226, aged 44, and was canonised two years later. He is remembered as the patron saint of animals and ecology.

Reflection: What gives my life meaning and purpose today?
