Born into a noble family in Assisi, Italy, Clare enjoyed a life of wealth and privilege. From a young age, she devoted herself to prayer. At the age of 18, she heard St. Francis of Assisi preach during a Lenten service at the Church of San Giorgio. Deeply inspired, she sought his guidance in living the Gospel more fully, and he became her lifelong friend and spiritual guide. Meditation obviously does not replace other forms of prayer. Quite the reverse. It will enhance them, it will deepen them, it will enrich them for you. The reading of scripture, the celebration of the sacraments will all become more meaningful. But we also need to change as a church. We need to be disciples who have understood the indwelling Christ and who have found personal transformation. There is this hunger for contemplation that needs to be nurtured, needs to be taught.
