Franciscan Saint Feature | Blessed Leopold of Alpendeire

Blessed Leopold of Alpendeire was born in 1864 in a small village in southern Spain to humble, hardworking peasant parents. From a young age, he followed their example of hard work and faith, labouring in the fields while faithfully attending daily Mass. Known for his generosity, he often gave away his tools and money to those in need.

In 1899, inspired during celebrations for the beatification of Diego of Cádiz, he answered God’s call to join the Capuchins. He spent most of his religious life in Granada, serving quietly as a gardener, sacristan, and questor. For more than fifty years, he walked the streets collecting alms, becoming known for his humility, charity, patience, and genuine love for people. Despite insults and hardships, he remained gentle and joyful, drawing many closer to God through his simple witness. He died in 1956 and was beatified in 2010, remembered as a shining example of humility, trust in God, and holiness in everyday life.
