Born in Acri, Italy, in 1669, St. Angelo of Acri felt drawn to religious life from a young age. His mother had a particular devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows and St. Francis of Assisi, which helped nurture his faith. At around eighteen, he felt called to become a Capuchin. His journey, however, was not without struggles. He left the Capuchin novitiate twice before finally persevering on his third attempt, and was ordained a priest in 1700.

St. Angelo initially struggled with preaching, as he was nervous and often forgot what he had prepared. Through prayer, study and perseverance, he gradually became a gifted preacher who could explain the Gospel simply and directly to ordinary people. From around 1702 until his death in 1739, he travelled extensively throughout southern Italy, preaching missions, hearing confessions for hours, and caring for the poor, sick and imprisoned.

His life was marked by reports of extraordinary spiritual gifts, including bilocation, the reading of hearts in confession, ecstasies during Holy Mass and prophecy, charisms reminiscent of those associated with St. Padre Pio. He served as a provincial superior and was known as the “Angel of Peace” for his gentle and austere leadership.

St. Angelo died on 30 October 1739, after more than 36 years of active ministry. His remains are venerated in the Basilica of St. Angelo of Acri in his hometown. He was canonised by Pope Francis on 15 October 2017.

His favourite exclamations capture the heart of his spirituality:

"Oh! How beautiful it is to love God! How beautiful it is to serve God!"

Reflection: What weakness in my life can I surrender to God?
